With the Australian Government’s tightening up of skilled migration policy and its focus on employer sponsorship, it’s more important than ever for skilled migration and employer sponsored job applicants to demonstrate that they are able meet Australian employers’ expectations and understand Australian employment law and conditions.

This is just as important in terms of your resume and application letter as it is at interview.

Both your application letter and your resume need to be written in “Australian” English and follow Australian business writing conventions.

For instance, while it is considered normal in some countries to include in your resume your date of birth and details about your family, Australian employers are not allowed to ask applicants questions about those things. Accordingly, it is normal in Australia to leave those pieces of information out of resumes.

There are many other factors that overseas applicants, or new migrants to Australia need to be aware of when writing for an Australian audience, including nuances of grammar and expression, the Australian way to set out resumes and how to approach delicate matters such as salary negotiations and references.

Research has shown that on average, Australian recruiters and employers spend less than 30 seconds reading each resume they receive.

If your resume doesn’t make an impact within that short timeframe, you will not be invited for an interview.

If you are seeking a job in Australia, don’t take a chance on submitting a resume that will leave a bad impression.
